Javier Barcala is a Spanish film director, screenwriter, playwright and creative director based in Madrid, Los Angeles and Belgium.

Although he edited his first publication before he could ride a bike, his writing career started as a junior journalist interviewing renowned music artists for international magazines and for music channel MTV. Moving to Belgium while still in college his career soon veered off to work as creative director for commercial brands, international avant-garde publications, artists and public institutions in projects that bridged contemporary art, music, fashion and commerce. Most notably he curated five consecutive global campaigns for giant fashion retailer H&M (Hennez & Mauritz) known as “Fashion Against AIDS”, which created social awareness about HIV/AIDS amongst the youth in 34 countries and raised over $150M for the cause in collaboration with icons the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Yoko Ono and Pharrell, among over 50 other artists.

A Fulbright Fellow by the U.S. Department of State of Cultural Affairs he graduated summa cum laude in Film Directing from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (California) in 2016, where he was mentored by film directors Tarsem Sighn and David Kellogg (DGA), and cinematographer Affonso Beato (ASC).

Of late, Barcala has brought to the stage the play “Dorian” a modern-day loose adaptation of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, which was produced by the national Dutch theatre company Noord Nederlands Tonnel and toured throughout 25 major theaters in The Netherlands and in Belgium throughout 2018, receiving wide acclaim of public and press.

From 2016 to 2018 he was a visiting teacher of Film Studies to master students at Amsterdam’s Sandberg Institute.

Among others, Barcala has been awarded a Mary Pickford Endowment Award by the University of Southern California, a Leonardo da Vinci European Excellence Award, and his videos have been shown in festivals the world over.

Since 2018 he is represented as a commercial director by Garlic in Spain and by The Bigger Picture in North America.

As of 2019 he’s in development of his debut narrative feature-length film, a follow up theater play and his first opera libretto, as well as actively working on new commercial work.
